Here is all you need to know about the formal Dalit leader from UP.
Born in the Paraunkh village of the Kanpur Dehat district, UP, Kovind was the son of a landless Kori (a Dalit weaving community) who had a small shop. He was the youngest of his siblings (5 brothers and 2 sisters). He lost his mother at the age of 5 when their thatched dwelling was caught on fire.
After his elementary school, Kovind had to walk 8 km to attend his junior school. Later he got his Commerce and LLB degree from DAV college which is affiliated with Kanpur University.

In his early days, Ram Nath Kovind was a lawyer and practised in the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court for 16 years.
Ram Nath Kovind political career started when he was elected as the Rajya Sabha MP from the Uttar Pradesh in 1994 and served until 12th March 2006.
During his tenure as an MP, Mr Kovind drew attention towards the basic infrastructures for education in the rural parts and helped in the construction of school building in UP and Uttarakhand.
Ram Nath Kovind is the formal head of the BJP’s Dalit Morcha. He was President of the BJP Dalit Morcha between 1998 and 2002 and President of the All-India Koli Samaj. He also served as national spokesperson for the party.
Ram Nath Kovind was the 35th governor of Bihar from 2015-2017.
Ram Nath Kovind represented India in the UN in New York and addressed UN General Assembly in October 2002.
