NORTH Korean leader Kim Jong-un has successfully tested a new high-thrust engine at its Tongchang-ri rocket launch station, officials from the secretive state have claimed.

Officials said the test was carried out at the Sohae Satellite Launching Ground, where North Korea has conducted long-range rocket tests.

Kim was photographed and filmed with a huge beaming smile as his generals applauded the successful trial of a long-range missile engine at the Sohae launch site yesterday. The test aimed to confirm the engine’s thrust power and gauge the reliability of its control system. Kim hailed it “a great event of historic significance” for the country’s development of intercontinental missiles.

It comes after North Korea has conducted five nuclear tests and a series of missile launches, in defiance of U.N. sanctions. And it is believed by experts and government officials to be working to develop nuclear-warhead missiles that could reach the United States.Yesterday the US hinted that it would consider a pre-emptive strike on North Korea – as President Trump took aim at the country’s despotic regime. The Washington-based think tank 38 North said last week satellite imagery indicated activity at the site’s vertical engine stand, possibly in preparation for a rocket engine test.
