Tell us if this sounds familiar.
You switch off your phone, keep it beside you, and start doing something else. Sometime later, you pick it up again, open your Instagram, and see that there are no new posts.
That’s when you realize that it has been only 2 minutes since you last checked your insta feed.
If you start to worry about this, you should…
If you still don’t realize as to why you should finally start worrying, we’ll tell you.
You should start worrying about your FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), getting out of hand.
And it’s time to unplug.
So, why you should take a break from your social media?
Social media is hammering at your self-esteem
Social media is a platform where people post about how lovely a time they’re having. And that makes you feel like a loser, because you don’t have such a happening life, you have not achieved as much, you’re not travelling that often, or have that romantic a life.
What you need to understand is anyone’s social media post is just a sliver of their life. Just because your friend is having an amazing time with her boyfriend at a party does not mean that she has the perfect relationship. That is just the image of her life that she wants to project onto others. That image may not be the whole story.
We’re not trying to make you feel good by assuring you that she is actually unhappy. We don’t know who or even what she is. But that is precisely the point. No one knows, except her.
So you should not self-inflict injuries to your self esteem by comparing your life to someone else’s, especially when you don’t even know her story, her actual, real story, in detail.
Social media is fucking with your mental health…
Social media has become a crucial factor in the increase incidence of depression and anxiety, especially among adolescents. This occurs as a result of lowered self-esteem. Low self-esteem, distorted concepts of perfection may not result from social media at once, but continued exposure for longer periods to social media do.
Take a step
It’s time for a social media detox…set aside a certain time everyday which you will dedicate to social media. Limit your social media use to just these periods and avoid using it at other times. We know it will be difficult, but try as hard as possible.
